The Grief of Estrangement

A Two-Hour Workshop for Parents
Carrying the Grief of Estrangement

I'm Ready to Join and Heal

Postponed until further notice

I am postponing this workshop, as my guest, Lenora Scurry, had to have surgery.  She is an expert in this area & I feel her being in the workshop will be a large benefit for anyone attending.  As soon as I have a new date, I will post if. If you have already registered, your credit will be applied to the new date. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

There is a particular kind of loss that the world doesn't quite have a language for. Your child is alive. You may even possibly know where they are, and yet there is a silence within you that feels like a wall you cannot see over, cannot climb, and were never given a map to.

This is the grief of estrangement — and it asks something almost unbearable of you: to mourn someone who is still living, called ambiguous grief.

This workshop was created specifically for that experience.

If this date & time are not working for you, that's OK.  As long as you register, but can not attend, you will be emailed the recording.

You can then watch it when it works for you & learn how to come to terms with the devastating pain of your estrangement.

This Is for You If...

This workshop was created for parents whose adult child has pulled away — whether gradually or suddenly — and who are living with the strange, suspended grief that comes with it.

You may be here because:

  • The calls stopped — and you're still not entirely sure why, or when it became permanent.

  • There was an incident you can trace back to a single moment, and you've been replaying it ever since.

  • You've tried everything you know how to try, and you are tired in a way that's hard to describe.

  • You can't talk about this with friends or family without it becoming a conversation about what you should do differently.

  • You are holding onto hope and heartbreak at the same time, and the weight of carrying both is wearing on you.

If any of this sounds familiar, you belong here.

              What You'll Carry With You
                  After This Workshop

  • A steadier sense of yourself.
Estrangement has a way of pulling parents into a relentless self-examination — replaying conversations, questioning everything, losing the thread of who you were before the distance set in. You'll leave with a clearer, quieter relationship with your own identity — one that doesn't depend on resolution to feel intact.

  • Language for something that's been hard to name.
When you can articulate what you're actually experiencing — not just "it's complicated" but the precise weight of it — you stop carrying it alone. You'll find words that fit.

  • Relief from the either/or.
Estrangement doesn't ask you to choose between maintaining hope and finding peace. You'll discover how both can exist honestly, without one canceling the other out.

  • The beginning of a quieter inner life.
Not detachment. Not giving up. Just the kind of stillness that allows you to breathe, and to live the days that are right in front of you — fully, even now.

Why This Workshop, Why Now?

You have likely been told — gently, repeatedly, and often by people who mean well — to give it time, as if time alone could soften something this sharp, this ongoing, this deeply personal. You may have been told to write a letter, to respect their space, to turn inward and focus on yourself, and maybe, in small moments, those suggestions have brought a brief sense of steadiness or relief. But advice can feel hollow when what you really need is someone to sit with you in what this actually costs.

What this workshop offers is something different — a space that feels like relief in the body simply because you don’t have to explain yourself anymore. You won’t be asked to tell the backstory, to justify the ache you carry, or to defend the reality that you are still a parent even when your child is no longer speaking to you. You’ll be in a room — a virtual one, yes, but still real in its understanding — with others who recognize the specific, aching texture of this grief: the birthdays and holidays that arrive with no call, the family gatherings where you rehearse “I’m fine” while something in you is not fine at all, and the quiet, disorienting loneliness of loving someone at a distance they chose, even when your love did not lessen.

You don’t need to be at rock bottom to come here. You don’t need to be newly estranged, and you don’t need to have carried this for years in order for it to matter. You only need to be someone who is tired of holding this alone, and ready — even if just in a small, uncertain way — to stop doing it in silence.

If this date & time are not working for you, that's OK. As long as you register, but can not attend, you will be emailed the recording.

You can then watch it when it works for you & learn how to come to terms with the devastating pain of your estrangement.

POSTPONED to a further date · 2:00–4:00 PM CST

You've already shown remarkable strength — in continuing to love, in continuing to function, in continuing to show up in your own life, even when a piece of it feels missing. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, everything.

This workshop won't promise reconciliation. But it will offer you something you may not have given yourself permission to want, to have your own life back, in the meantime.

There is more for you than waiting.

Heartfelt Words from Clients

"I strongly recommend Pat Acklie-Roth for any of your grief counseling needs. I went to Pat because I thought I was grieving the loss of my mother. On week four, my focus completely changed, and it took me very much by surprise.  When I discussed it with Pat, she said that if that is what my heart and head were telling me, then that is who we would focus on.

Pat gives you her full attention and is an intent listener. She guides you with grace and can provide examples when you get stuck or do not understand something. Pat uses her own experiences as confidentiality is one of her top priorities. I never felt judged or small. She genuinely cares about her clients and truly gives them her all.

Pat showed me new ways to cope with stressful situations and how to make more statement sentences instead of asking and not getting results. One of my favorite things she did was role-playing. It felt kind of silly at first, but when it was over, I had such a sense of relief and a lighter feeling that it is hard to describe.

Pat will also work around your schedule and plan session times that work the best for your life.

If you are struggling and need help, please reach out to Pat. She counsels with compassion, and you do not feel like you are just another client to her."

Yours in healing,

Daphne Wiegert

"I wanted to personally tell you what a wonderful job Pat Acklie-Roth has done for me, being my coach. She was by far a helping voice on the other line throughout the entire course. I enjoyed the lessons. But, connecting with my coach helped me to understand it all and guide me to reaching my dreams. Within the course, I quit smoking cigarettes and set many other goals that I can accomplish. "THIS OR SOMETHING BETTER" is now my favorite motto. I am lucky enough to have her for my motivating feedback."

Michelle Erlenbusch

"As a birthday gift to myself, I wanted to gain some perspective on some challenging events in my life. Pat's insightful questions, supportive demeanor and her reflections fully supported this process. I'm grateful for the four weeks I had with her guiding me through her program. Pat is one of the most compassionate and caring people I have met!"

Penny R.

"Pat Acklie-Roth will help you learn about the possibilities one can find in learning and moving forward in your grief journey. Pat has been very compassionate about her work and has helped me re-engage and restart myself into the present day and in planning actions on building my life into the future. I am experiencing good results and plan for more engagement of my heart, mind, and soul. She has helped me focus, as she herself is focused, compassionate and giving of her knowledge and experience, and she has certainly helped me find more balance."

Patricia A.

"Hello to all of you grieving fans; I also am a grieving fan. I miss my wife terribly after 57 years of marriage. We have all come a long way. We also need counseling; I mean counseling we might think we don’t need, like I did; how wrong I was. I thought counseling was a group of individuals sitting around a table grieving for each other in hope that someone would give me the magic formula. There is no magic formula.
This is when I was introduced to Pat Acklie-Roth, a Licensed Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist & Certified Life Mastery Consultant. Her method (and I like) is communicating through Zoom. She is available 24/7 and can be reached at 956-586-0356. You may get the message, “I can’t come to the phone but leave a message." I guarantee she will get back to you. I highly recommend Pat as a Grief Recovery Specialist and as a friend of mine for many years.
What special items that make Pat stick out most of all is that she is a Christian, shows how God is behind all that is happening, & is a great listener. She added a personal touch by gifting me, as a bonus, a Memory Bear made from my wife’s garment.
I sign this recommendation with Grace and Peace."

John
